What is Zero-byte file

in

A Zero-byte file is a computer file that contains no data. In other words, it has a file size of zero bytes. Despite having a file name and existing as a file in the file system, it does not contain any information or content.

These files are often created intentionally for various purposes, such as placeholders, markers, or to fulfill specific system requirements. They can be useful in scenarios where the presence of a file is necessary but the actual content is irrelevant or non-existent.

Files showing zero bytes. Why?

I’ve encountered an issue where files show zero bytes. This can be due to a damaged partition table, failing hard drive, interrupted saving, or file system corruption (like with exFAT). To prevent this, I regularly back up data, use reliable file systems (like NTFS or APFS), properly eject drives, and monitor drive health. More details here.
